Past Work

Here’s a collection of six previous pieces of work that relate to my thesis project. A brief overview of each work is presented on this page with Development Directive PDFs with full process narrative and work linked.

Work Sample Four:

3D Game Design: Desert Oasis

Influenced by the author Paul Bowles, I am fascinated with the lone adventurer in the desert. I wanted to relate concepts of post-colonialism/Orientalism, and spiritual rite of passage to the Dakar Rally races through the Sahara in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Process: In the mood board I worked to find a good balance between warms and cools with the dominance of the warm sun and sands. Muted colors, simplicity, and a dramatic contrast between the newer shiny and garish metals of the cans and other debris with the more traditional mud homes. Modeling in Maya off reference photographs and my own sketches. Textures are built in Substance designer, Substance Painter and Photoshop, with grunge brushes and sources from photo-reference. Landscape is built in world machine and textured with Substance Painter with 4K textures. All assets are then added to Unreal 4 and is populated and lit in Unreal.

How This Relates to My Work:

This game design and 2d Modeling class helped me use the game dev pipeline with mood boards, reference materials and proper model sheets for presentation. All things that I now use in my subverted game pipeline for conceptualizing and building my level for my project. It also gave me intense deep-dive in the key tools that I continue to use, like Substance, Unreal and Maya.
